Stephan is the San Francisco-based artist who conceived and launched The ClimateMusic Project. He is a long-time member of a group of artists working out of a prominent studio in the central Market Street district of San Francisco.
Stephan had a distinguished parallel career in public service, including serving as the Director of the United States Commercial Service’s (U.S. Department of Commerce) office in San Francisco, with additional assignments in Europe and Latin America. He left public service in 2017 to focus full-time on The ClimateMusic Project.
Stephan holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, and a Master of Science in environmental management with a focus on environmental science from the University of San Francisco, where he received departmental recognition for outstanding academic performance.
Reflecting his ability to successfully complete what he starts, Stephan was once part of a two man team that won a long-distance open ocean rowing trophy after a three-year campaign that included a leaky boat, capsizes in surf, narrow misses by ships, getting lost in fogs, and thousands of ocean miles rowed in training.
Stephan was selected as a member of the 2024 EC50 cohort of global change makers by the venerable Explorers Club in New York City.
